Postmortem CO - oximetry

چکیده

The focus of this article is the application of CO-oximetry in the analysis of blood samples after death. This is largely confined to confirming or excluding carbon monoxide poisoning as a contributory or prime cause of death, by measurement of COHb. Issues addressed will include: the toxicity of carbon monoxide; the causes of lethal carbon monoxide poisoning; and the particular difficulties surrounding the use of CO-oximetry to analyze samples collected after death that may be in a state of putrefaction.

Accident or arson: is CO-oximetry reliable for carboxyhemoglobin measurement postmortem?

A 46-year-old woman was found dead in the basement of her home after a fire. External examination of the body showed a wound to the head and soot in the nose and mouth, with soot also found internally in the trachea and bronchi upon autopsy. On questioning by the police, the woman’s husband admitted that he and his wife were having an argument that led to him accidentally knocking her unconscio...

Noninvasive pulse CO-oximetry expedites evaluation and management of patients with carbon monoxide poisoning.

PURPOSES Pulse CO-oximetry (Rad-57; Masimo Corp, Irvine, CA) has been available since 2005. To date, all published clinical studies have focused on clinical reliability and whether the device enhances case finding through screening of various populations. This study examines whether use of pulse CO-oximetry shortens the time to diagnosis and treatment of patients with carbon monoxide (CO) poiso...

Non-invasive measurements of carboxyhemoglobin and methemoglobin in children with sickle cell disease.

Assessment of oxyhemoglobin saturation in patients with sickle cell disease (SCD) is vital for prompt recognition of hypoxemia. The accuracy of pulse oximeter measurements of blood oxygenation in SCD patients is variable, partially due to carboxyhemoglobin (COHb) and methemoglobin (MetHb), which decrease the oxygen content of blood. This study evaluated the accuracy and reliability of a non-inv...

Laboratory assessment of oxygenation in methemoglobinemia.

BACKGROUND This case conference reviews laboratory methods for assessing oxygenation status: arterial blood gases, pulse oximetry, and CO-oximetry. Caveats of these measurements are discussed in the context of two methemoglobinemia cases. CASES Case 1 is a woman who presented with increased shortness of breath, productive cough, chest pain, nausea, fever, and cyanosis. CO-oximetry indicated a...

Meta-analysis of arterial oxygen saturation monitoring by pulse oximetry in adults

OBJECTIVE: The purposes of the study were to: (1) describe the aggregate strength of the relationship of arterial oxygen saturat ion as measured by pulse oximetry with the standard of arterial blood gas analysis as measured by co-oximetry, (2) examine how various factors affect this relationship, and (3) describe an aggregate estimate of the bias and precision be tween oxygen saturation as meas...
